Statement on Body Cameras
The South Toms River Police Department is pleased to announce that body worn cameras (BWC’s) have been assigned to officers in the patrol Division. This cutting edge technology is designed to enhance officer safety, reduce liability, assist with prosecution and case resolution, and to promote professionalism and accountability.
Policy and procedures have been implemented, which require the recording of all police / citizen encounters, while safeguarding individual privacy rights. Recordings are safely stored in the department’s evidence management system, which may only be accessed in accordance with New Jersey Attorney General’s Guidelines.
The shown photo depicts the BWC currently used by this department. BWC’s are positioned in the front of the officer’s uniform as shown here. Citizens should expect the BWC to be activated during all police encounters and should be confident that an unbiased and accurate account of the encounter is being produced.
